The Stefan Batory Foundation is an independent, nonprofit, public service nongovernmental organization, founded by the American financier and philanthropist George Soros, who launched a network of foundations currently operating in 31 countries in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, South Africa, Guatemala and the United States. Funding for the Foundation’s work comes from the Open Society Institute, founded and sponsored by George Soros, and also from other sources. Both in Poland and in other countries of this region, the Foundation is committed to promulgating the fundamental principles of democracy, such as the rule of law, transparency in public life, defense of civil liberties, and the rights of minorities, women, children, disabled people, immigrants and refugees.
The Foundation’s website has information on 11 national and international programs through which it works, and also about the implementation of regional programs intended to facilitate cooperation and exchange of experience in Central and Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Bulletins and web pages give information about activities and about how to apply for funding. Reports and bulletins are distributed to the national and local media, and to hundreds of institutions and individuals. All those interested can also obtain them in the Foundation office.
