Caritas Internationalis activity is based on the social teaching of the Catholic Church. This teaching emphasizes the dignity of the human person, and extends its concern to all creation. Caritas is active in over 200 countries and territories throughout the world. It operates without regard to creed, race, gender or ethnicity. Through its efforts, Caritas believes it can help the poor, weak and oppressed to become instruments of change, acting to overcome poverty, injustice, and unacceptable living/working conditions. It works to promote local autonomy and empowers people to take an active role in the matters that affect their lives. Caritas believes that its ongoing presence in communities helps it to effectively adapt to change and to pool resources from all levels of society, making it possible to quickly analyze issues and take action locally and globally. Caritas seeks to foster solidarity with other nongovernmental organizations and institutions in order to most effectively promote structures that assist the poor, fight injustice, and care for the environment.
